At a press conference on Wednesday the UFC announced that it’s heading to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil for an August 2011 event at the HSBC Arena.
The event will mark the first time that the UFC has moved back to the homeland of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in 12 years. The last UFC event in Brazil was on Oct. 16, 1998, in São Paulo. Known as UFC Brazil, the event featured the likes of Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva, both of whom are still current UFC fighters.
There is no doubt that this will be absolutely huge for Brazil. With the World Cup and the Olympics already schedule to head their way, they’re definitely making their mark as one of the biggest emerging economies in the world.
Currently no fights have been scheduled for the fight card, but there is little doubt that it will feature a host of great Brazilian fighters. As Dana White stated in announcing the event, “It’s too early to see what’s going to happen. A lot of fights have to play out before (we know who’ll be on the card).”
